Photo Session

Brie took her first professional pictures yesterday! She peed several times (on mommy), spit up (on mommy), and farted really loudly (on daddy - which surprised him!). Baby's 1st Christmas

Christmas this year was extra special because it was our baby's first Christmas! We had a great time with both sides of the family...

We spent Christmas Eve with Matt's family. We opened stockings and presents and had Christmas dinner. Brie was a tiny bit fussy, so it made the day seem a little long. But overall we had fun spending time with the Schulz's!

On Christmas day we went to my cousin Christina's house in the morning for brunch with the Artenian side. Brie opened lots of presents and was held by many family members for the first time. Great-Grandma Florence loved holding her!
For Christmas dinner we went to my mom and dad's house to spend time with the Smith family. We opened MORE presents! Grandpa Mike held Brie for most of the time - he is just sooooo in love with her!!

Brienne had a great first Christmas. Favorite gifts include her new teddy bear from Auntie Kendra, her Lladro figurine from Grandpa Mike and Mimi plus her gifts from Hawaii, and her rocking chair from Grandma and Grandpa Schulz among MANY MANY MANY other great things!

Brie at Home

Brienne is now 16 days old! We have only been at home now for a few days, but Brie already has some favorite things! She loves her hands. Whether it is when she eats or when she sleeps, her little hands must be free. Brie also loves sleeping in her car seat, which allows mommy and daddy to sleep "peacefully" for a couple of hours at a time. Many adorable little noises come out of our little baby - grunts and squeaks that make us smile. Tummy time is another favorite activity. Brie is able to turn her head from side to side as she lays on her belly. She is eating well now and her follow up appointment was good.

Many people have come to visit and many members of our church family have brought us meals! Grandma Mimi, Grandma Schulz, and Auntie Jeannette have provided much help to us around the house, too.

Brie's Hospital Stay

Unfortunately, we had a short stay in the hospital...

We had a pediatrician appointment on Tuesday, December 9 and found that Brie had lost too much weight. After getting blood test results, the doctor found that her sodium levels were too high. We went to Children's Hospital ER right away to have her treated for dehydration. The doctors there were concerned that it could have been an infectious disease causing the dehydration, rather than just poor feeding, so they gave her antibiotics for 7 days! Mommy and daddy were very tired of being in the hospital after a week, but Brie did so well! She responded great to the fluids, increased amount of food, and antibiotics. All of her lab results were great and they never did determine if she had an infection (it probably really was just dehydration, but better to be safe than sorry). We finally got to go home on Tuesday, December 16 when Brie was 12 days old. At that point she had spent more of her life in the hospital than at home. Both sets of grandparents were so helpful during our stay. We appreciate our families so much!

Introducing Brienne

Brienne Vernay arrived on December 4, 2008 at 4:15pm - our little miracle! She weighed 7lbs 7oz and was 20" long.

Daddy and Brie

We went to the hospital at 3:30am on 12/4/08 and I was ready to start pushing by 2:35pm. At 4:15pm we were blessed greatly with the arrival of our little Brie.

Our homecoming happened two days later, on December 6th.

Java is curious about her little sister!

Lots of people came to visit Brienne in the hospital. Grandma and Grandpa Schulz, Grandpa Mike and Grandma Mimi (Marina), Great Grandma Schulz, Uncle Tim and Auntie Ally, Auntie Kendra, Auntie Liss, Auntie Jeannette, Great Uncle Larry, Cousin Christina, Sonny and Tina, and Kim.

So far she has several favorite things to do. Brie loves spending time with friends and family who visited at the hospital and at home. she also likes making cute faces and sucking on her binky. She doesn't really like baths or getting her diapers changed.
Brie had a photo session at the hospital!
Everyone is doing fine - mommy and daddy are a little tired, but we love our new bundle of joy!

Matt and I are so excited to start this blog to share with our friends and families all of the interesting things happening in our lives! Let's do a quick update of the past six and a half years...

On June 8, 2002, Matt and I got married!

We have been on a lot of amazing vacations including Italy, France, England, New York, Philly, Chicago, Hawaii, Oregon, The Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, St. Louis, and of course lots of cool places in California!

We bought a house in October of 2004...a real fixer-upper!
Since we've moved in we have replaced the carpet, refinished the hardwood floors, textured and painted 8 rooms, had the yard relandscaped, put in a new garage door, built a fence, had the city put in a sidewalk on the side of our house, taken out many yucky trees, built walkways, had a bathroom redone, put in tons of new light fixtures, and the list goes on and on. We had help from family and friends for most of it, but we did have to hire some people as well!

Matt got his BA and he is working on his Masters. I got a teaching credential and a masters!

Currently I teach high school English and yearbook and Matt is a marketing manager for a group of radiologists. Matt enjoys photography and working in the garden. I love scrapbooking and dancing. Unfortunately we both really enjoy shopping!! HAHAHA! We also love traveling - we go someplace every year - sometimes with friends or family and sometimes just the two of us. And because of various individual activities/responsibilities, we have gone many places without the other, which we like less and less.
And the biggest news is that we are expecting a baby girl within the next week or two! I'm sure the next hundred blogs will be all about her.
Now you are all caught up on our lives up to this point. We hope you will check our blog every month or so to see new pictures of our family and read about new things that are happening with us!
